What is the opposite of a rhetrick? It is language without intention to trick or befuddle. On the axis of truth-nontruth (admittedly the most contested linguistic axis of them all), it is language that seems to fall near the truth pole. An example? Less than an hour ago at the Senate Judiciary Hearing, Professor Christine Blasey Ford was asked what she remembers in particular about the alleged sexual assault by Brett Kavanaugh and Mark Judge around thirty-five years ago. She said she still can hear “the laughter, the uproarious laughter.” I’m convinced this is the truth. Who could make that up?
